Young men! You are wanted.
From the street corners, from the saloons, and playhouses, from
the loafers' rendezvous, from the idlers' promenade, turn your
steps into the highway of the Godly and noble aim, and earnest
work. There are prizes enough for every successful worker, crowns
enough for every honorable head, that goes through the smoke of
conflict to victory.
There within the young man is an upspringing of lofty sentiment,
which contributes to his elevation. Though there are obstacles
to be surmounted, and difficulties to be vanquished, yet with
the truth of God's word, and leaning on God's noble purposes,
and indefatigable exertion, he may be crowned with imperishable
honors. He may never obtain the warrior's crimson wreath, the
poet's chaplet of bays, or the statesman's laurel award. Yea,
more though his name may never be heard beyond the narrow limits
of his own neighborhood, yet is his mission none the less a high
and holy one.
In the moral and physical world, not only the field of battle,
but also the consecrated cause of Truth and virtue, calls
for champions, and the field for doing God's service is "white
unto the harvest." Beautiful lives have blossomed in
the darkest places of sin, as pure white lilies full of fragrance,
once the soul chooses to surrender to the Gospel. (John
3:16) No possession is so productive of real influence,
as a highly cultivated life, in the Word of God. Wealth, birth,
and official station may, and do secure to their possessors an
external, superficial courtesy; but they never did, and they never
can, command the reverence of the heart. It is only the man who
has surrendered his life to Jesus, that is able to blend a cultivated
mind and upright heart, through Christ. That man commands the
tribute of deep and genuine respect! -Revised.
