But say all we may of public affairs
and political power and the government and its greatness, the
source of it all is the home. From the home go the taxes, the
votes, the soldiers, the officers, the principles, the intelligence,
the public spirit, which make and support the national power.
The nation is a combination of homes and their interests. It
comes back to this that the nation is what its homes make it.
Therefore the best work for the nation is done in the home.
The intelligence, the moral worth, the business success of the
home is so much done for the nation. If the home is coarse and
poor and drunken, there is so much done to make a coarse, poor
and drunken country. If the home is shiftless it puts so much
shiftlessness into the national compact. All worth and meanness
in every home go to make up so much worth and meanness in the
nation. So it comes to this that The Home is the Heart of
the Nation. Every member of every home makes the contribution
of himself to the nation. The nation is not a few of its leading
citizens, but all its people.
How inspiring, therefore, is the thought that each humble home
in this country is a part of that great republic, which today,
commands the attention and admiration of the civilized world.
How quickening to honorable pride and personal endeavor in the
way of well doing and Christian witnessing, is the fact that
each citizen adds the force of his character and substance to
the country which is doing so much for humanity and holds such
a place in the world's esteem.
